Unit of Measurement in Civil Engineering Works

Civil engineering involves the planning, designing, and construction of various structures, such as buildings, bridges, roads, and water supply systems. In order to accomplish these tasks, civil engineers use a variety of units of measurement.

Some of the most commonly used units of measurement in civil engineering include meters, feet, inches, millimeters, and centimeters for length, cubic meters, cubic feet, gallons, and liters for volume, and newtons, pounds, and kilograms for force.

These units of measurement are used to specify the dimensions, quantity, and properties of various construction materials and components.

All work shall be measured net subjected to the following tolerance unless otherwise stated.

IS Code: 1200 – Methods of Measurement of Works of Civil Engineering

  1. Dimension shall be measured to the nearest 0.01 m.
  2. The area shall be worked out to the nearest 0.01 sq. m.
  3. Cubic content shall be calculated to the nearest 0.01 cu.m.
  4. Weight shall be worked out to the nearest 0.001 tonnes.
  5. The thickness of the RCC slab shall be measured to the nearest 0.005 m.
  6. The thickness of the woodwork should be measured to the nearest 0.002m.
  7. The thickness of steelwork shall be measured to the nearest 0.001m.
  8. The length of the steel reinforcement bar shall be measured to the nearest 0.005 m and its diameter to the nearest 0.0001 m.
  9. If the thickness of the road is less than 20m,m its thickness shall be measured to the nearest 0.005 m.
  10. The area shall be measured to the nearest 0.01 sq. M., but the area of steel shall be measured to the nearest 0.0001 cu.m.
  11. Volume shall be measured to the nearest 0.01 cu.m., but the volume of wood shall be measured to the nearest 0.001 cu.m.
  12. Unless otherwise specified weights shall be measured to the nearest 0.001 kg.
  13. Steel reinforcement in RCC work shall be measured separately in another item.
  14. To achieve the desired accuracy in measurement length of the reinforcement bar is measured nearest to 0.001 kg
  15. To achieve the desired accuracy in measurement thickness of the slab is measured at nearest to 1 mm.
  16. Unless otherwise specified cubical contents shall be measured to the nearest 0.01 cu. m.
  • The same type of work under different conditions and nature shall be measured separately under separate items e.g.
  • Work underwater
  • Work in liquid mud
  • Work under tides
  • Work in snow, etc.

In the case of structural concrete, brickwork, or stone masonry, the work under the following categories shall be measured separately and the height shall be described.

  • From the foundation to the plinth
  • From the plinth level to the first-floor level
  • From the first-floor level to the second-floor level and so on,

The bill of quantities shall fully describe the material, proportion, and workmanship and accurately represent the work to be executed.

Basic Units of Measurement

Following are some basic units of measurement,

The seven SI base units are comprised of:

  1. Length – meter (m)
  2. Time – second (s)
  3. Amount of substance – mole (mole)
  4. Electric current – ampere (A)
  5. Temperature – kelvin (K)
  6. Luminous intensity – candela (cd)
  7. Mass – kilogram (kg)
