Steel Quantity Calculation Excel Sheet

Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) slab steel calculation is one of the most important steps in construction cost estimation. To simplify this process, a Steel Quantity Calculation Excel Sheet is used to quickly calculate the quantity and cost of steel required for slab reinforcement based on standard engineering practices.
1) Slab Section – Data Required
To calculate steel quantity accurately, the following input data is required in the Excel sheet:
i) Slab Dimensions
- Length of slab (in feet)
- Width of slab (in feet)
- Thickness of slab (in millimeters only)
Note: If dimensions are available in inches, convert them into feet before entering.
ii) Steel Bar Details
- Diameter of Main Reinforcement Bars (mm)
- Diameter of Distribution Reinforcement Bars (mm)
Common bar diameters used:
- 8 mm
- 10 mm
- 12 mm
- 16 mm
iii) Bar Spacing
- Spacing of Main Steel Bars (mm)
- Spacing of Distribution Steel Bars (mm)
Spacing usually ranges between 100 mm to 200 mm, depending on design requirements.
iv) Cover Details
- Side Cover
- Top Cover
- Bottom Cover
If cover details are not provided, standard slab cover (15–20 mm) is automatically considered in the Excel sheet.
2) Assumptions Used in Calculation
For ease of calculation and standardization, the following assumptions are used:
i) Bent-up bars angle = 45°
ii) Bent-up bars location = Provided at Effective Span / 4 distance, as per IS code recommendations.
iii) Standard hook length = 9D
(Where D = Diameter of steel bar in mm)
iv) Supporting wall width = 300 mm (0.3 m) fixed value
These assumptions ensure practical accuracy for residential and commercial slab estimation.
RCC Slab Reinforcement Details
Plan of Slab Reinforcement
- Main bars run along the shorter span
- Distribution bars run along the longer span
- Bent-up bars are provided near supports to resist negative bending moments
This Excel sheet supports both One-Way Slab and Two-Way Slab calculations.
Steps to Calculate Steel Quantity Using Excel Sheet
Follow these simple steps:
- Enter Length & Width of slab in feet
- Enter Slab Thickness in mm
- Enter Main & Distribution bar diameter
- Enter Cover details (optional)
- Enter Spacing of Main & Distribution bars in mm
Once all inputs are entered correctly, the Excel sheet will automatically calculate the following values:

Steps to Calculate Steel Quantity
- Enter the Length and Width of your slab in ft in Excel Sheet. (Convert Inches to feet)
- Enter the Thickness of the slab in mm only.
- Enter the Main and distribution steel diameter in Excel Sheet.
- Enter Cover Details. (If Don’t have cover details let it be, they are standard cover)
- Enter the Spacing of the Main bent bar and Distribution steel bars in mm only.
As you Enter these data correctly in the excel sheet on the right-hand side you can see the following quantity of slab:
No. of bent-up bars =______
No. of Distribution bars = ______
Length of Main Bars = ______
Length of Distribution Steel = ______
Weight of Main Steel bars = ______
Weight of Distribution Steel bars = _______
Total Steel Required For Slab = ________
Cost of Total Steel at a rate of 45 rs./ kg =______
