What Is Flush Door?

A Flush Door has completely smooth surfaces and is made by sandwiching plywood or blackboard over a light timber frame. The hollow part between these doors is filled with cardboard/hardwood. They can be finished with either laminates or veneers.

Flush Door Meaning: A flush door has an entirely smooth surface, if water were to be splashed on its surface, it would simply flow off its surface without accumulating.

It is said that the first impression is usually the last and this is true especially to our homes. So, the entrance creates a lasting impression on visitor’s minds but somehow doors remain unnoticed either they are elegantly done.

There are so many benefits of using flush doors than other regular ones. They have many other qualities that make them far superior to regular doors.

  • its designs are very simple so they are cheap in cost and easily available.

Disadvantages | Cons of Flush Doors

There are many disadvantages of flush doors which are listed below,

  • It is factory manufactured and hence correct or perfect size of the door opening must be given, as subsequent alternations are very difficult.
  • Plywood covered flush door cannot be used where they will be exposed to rain and the sun.
  • The biggest disadvantage of this door is that it is heavy. So it is difficult to handle, transport, and install in your home.
  • They are difficult to repair on the top veneer or laminate or plywood starts delaminating on account of defects of temperature, moisture, etc.

Types of Flush Doors

Mainly, There are 3 flush door types,

1. Solid Core Flush Door

Solid core flush doors are very popular. Wood which is used in these doors is mainly hard and mineral composition. The different combinations of particle board, laminated core, cross band, face wood veneer, blockboard, etc. are used to manufactured these doors.

The width of these doors must be more than 7.5 cm of stiles, top and bottom rails. This type of door also provides sound insulation properties. The frame of these doors is made of timber wood and hardwood lipping is done around the framing to impart more strength and durability to the door.

The width of wood lipping should be equal to the thickness of the core. They are heavy in weight and possess good strength. Due to high strength and more stability, these doors are mainly used as exterior doors for homes and other properties.

The price of Solid-core flush doors in the current market is 220-250 Rs. per square feet depending upon the quality of laminated materials.

2. Hollow Core Flush Door

As the name suggests, hollow-core flush doors are hollow from inside with supporting system mainly honeycomb support system used in this door.

Similar to the solid core flush door, the framing of stiles, top, bottom, and intermediate rails should be more than 7.5cm in width. The frame consists of stiles along with top, intermediate & bottom rails and by fixing wooden battens on the rails for filling spaces/gaps between stiles and rails.

In this door, the thickness of plywood should be always more than 6 mm. Plywood sheets and face veneers are glued to the core under pressure. These doors are light in weight as compared to the other types but not as strong as solid core flush doors.

Hollow-core flush doors are available in the market at the price of 180-200 Rs. per square feet.

  • Hollow-core flush doors are light in weight so they can be easily handled and equipped.
  • The surface of this door has the ability to counteract stains, scratches, and crashes.
  • These doors can be made in any shape and are easy to install.
  • These doors offer a variety of designs and decorative finishes.
  • This is easily manufactured and cheap.

3. Cellular Core Flush Doors

The cellular core flush door frames are constructed by fixing plywood battens and they are not less than 25mm wide.

The shutter is manufactured by gluing plywood sheets and face veneers on both the faces of the core under pressure. In this type of door, the thickness of the plywood sheet must be always more than 3mm.

As these doors are chemically treated and vacuum pressed, thus they possess heat and water-resistant properties.

The price of a cellular core flush door is 150-170 Rs. per square feet.

These doors are manufactured by using a timber frame that is covered by plywood on both sides of the door and the hollow portion of the door is filled with cardboards/hardwood. These doors are generally finished with veneer and polish over it or they may finish with Laminate overply or MDF used on it.Wooden doors can finish in various ways using ingredients such as oil, paint, wax polishing, and spirit polishing directly on wood or they can finish with laminate fixing on wooden doors.


  • They are less expensive.
  • It cannot split, peel or rot and doesn’t need any periodic maintenance.
  • They are resistant to stains, scratches, and crashes.
  • They are easy to clean. They are resistant to termite than wooden doors.
  • Wooden doors can cut and adjusted to any size and minor changes can easily be done at the site.
  • Wooden doors have a lot of designs than flush doors.
  • Carving can be done on wooden doors.


These doors are manufactured in the factory so you have to provide the exact size of the door otherwise it will be very hard to redo the size.Wooden doors are more to termite attack than any other materials available in the market except Teak wood Doors.


Flush Doors have good strength but are not as good as a wooden doors.Wooden doors have better strength than a flush door with a better lifespan.

Aesthetical Appearance

Flush doors are cost-effective but they are not as aesthetically appealing as Wooden doors.Wooden doors are aesthetically more fascinating than flush doors.
