What Is Concrete Grinder: Walk Behind Concrete Grinder

What Is Concrete Grinder?

A concrete grinder is a tool used to perform finishing on concrete surfaces. It is also used to perform grinding and leveling of the concrete surface. The outcome of these tools gives a smooth finish to the surface.

The grinder is best used for dull surfaces due to excessive dirt and mud accumulation on the surface or to remove a layer of aggressive coating from the surface. More on the grinder, it can be used to perform polishing on the concrete surface giving out a shiny surface. In the process of grinding the new diamond gets exposed to the surface as it is carried out.

The diamond particles are not put in contact at the very beginning. As the process is carried out, the coarser grit shifts to finer grits. Most of the grinding process begins with a value less than 100.

Types of Concrete Grinders

The type of grinder to be put into use totally depends on the job to be done and the material to be removed from the surface. The grinder is classified into two categories.

  1. Hand Held Grinders
  2. Walk Behind Concrete Grinder

Handheld Concrete Grinders

The handheld grinder is a grinder small in size, as the person can hold it in their hands while performing the process.

This type of grinder is used to grind the corners of the concrete surfaces or hard-to-reach areas where walk-behind concrete grinds can’t reach. This grinder has a smaller grinding area as compared to the walk-behind concrete grinder.

This grinding process produces a large amount of dust that can be taken out through an extraction hose attached to a tool or by using a shroud. The image shown below is the image of a worker grinding the concrete surface using a handheld grinder.

Walk-Behind Concrete Grinder

Another type of grinder is the walk-behind grinder which is larger in size than the handheld, as the person has to walk behind it to perform the process. This type of grinder is used to grind the body of the floor.

The grinder in this unit is larger as compared to the handheld grinder and is used to grind the large area in less time. There are many models of walk-behind grinders in the market that are run either by LP, petrol, or diesel.

The walk-behind grinder consists of wheels which makes it easy to move this heavy machine. The below image shows a type of walk-behind grinder with a flexible handle for better posture.

Components of Concrete Grinder

A grinder has a rotating head that is used to smooth the surface as well as to level it. The main component in the grinder is Diamond and Bond. Diamond particles are embedded in the grinder which is used for the grinding process.

The bond is the material used to hold the diamond particles properly in the grinder. These days diamond grinding is mostly used worldwide to perform the process.

The grinding process can be carried out in two ways wet method and the dry method. In the wet method, a continuous flow of water is used throughout the process. A huge amount of slurry is built while using this method.

Another method is the dry method which is carried out without any use of liquid, in this process a huge amount of dust is produced. A dust containment unit can be used so that the dust can be collected in one container and not flow in the air.

1. Bond

Bond is one of the important parts of the grinder. Bonds help hold the diamond particles in the proper place. To make the grinder work properly it is necessary to make sure the bond does not match the material used for grinding.

Throughout the process, the bond undergoes wearing in a pattern or in a planned way so the new diamond gets exposed to the surface for grinding without the sudden contact of diamond to the surface.

2. Diamond

Diamonds are available in different shapes and sizes for grinding. For polishing concrete surfaces, machines that are equipped with diamond partial abrasives are put into use. These machines can help grind down the concrete and obtain the desired amount of shine and smoothness needed.

The grinder diamond used to carry out this process is synthetic diamond. The sizes of the diamond are represented in terms of grits and are available in different sizes represented by its number known as grit number.

The corresponding size of grit and grit number of the diamond are inversely proportional to each other. The size of a diamond has different uses for example, for removal of aggressive coating on the concrete surface large diamonds are put into use. For the purpose of polishing and honing small size diamonds are used.

Uses:

There are many uses of a concrete grinder such as :

  1. One of the use of the concrete surface grinder is to remove stubborn tile glues present on the surface can be easily removed with the help of concrete grinding.
  2. It is less expensive the many other membrane removal methods.
  3. The surface finish on concrete done by grinders is better than other stone floor surfaces.
  4. The concrete unevenly cast can be smoothened and made shiny with the help of a grinder.
  5. Concrete surfaces can be ground in an extra amount to expose the aggregates and polished to give a good aesthetic look. Concrete grinding makes old and worn-out concrete surfaces look as good as new with the grinding process. concrete grinding removes all the imperfect concrete and inconsistencies in concrete to make it look smooth and used again.
  6. The process provides good shine by polishing the surfaces using grinders.
  7. It’s hard to get rid of dirt and impurities that accumulate on the surface with time. However, a grinder makes it easy to get them all off.
  8. It is easier to install flooring once the concrete grinding process is done and not the other way out.
  9. This grinding process and durable and last long. Even for rough usages this process is proven to be good.

Advantages

Apart from the use of a grinder, there are many reasons why it is better than any other method of membrane removal. Let’s have a look at some of the important benefits some of the advantages of using concrete grinding are.

  1. The grinder makes old and worn-out concrete surfaces look as good as new with the grinding process. The concrete grinding removes all the imperfect concrete and inconsistencies in concrete to make it look smooth and used again.

  5. This grinding process and durable and lasts long. Even for rough usages, this process is proven to be good.

Don’t of Concrete Grinding

There are some things you should keep in mind before doing concrete grinding or using a grinder. People tend to make mistakes while using a grinder. Some of them are listed below.

  1. Choosing the wrong diamond can lead to improper and excessive grinding of the floor which can cause several problems.
  2. Always put time to grind the floor, doing it in a rush can cause unevenness in the floor which will look bad.
  3. The large machines are heavy to operate make sure you have enough power as you will be exhausted fast.
